Carpet Beetle
Carpet Beetle can be a serious household pest. They are around 3mm in length and feed on natural fibres that can damage carpets, furniture and clothing.
They usually lay their eggs in air ducts, closets, under furniture or baseboards. Once the larvae hatch they hide in dark, undisturbed areas where they can feed on organic materials.
Signs of infestation include the presence of damaged fibres, molted larval skins, and sightings of adult beetles near windows.

Bed Bugs
Bed Bugs refers to a species of insect that feeds solely on the blood of warm blooded mammals. Their name derives from their preferred habitat of houses and especially beds where they can feed unnoticed.
Bed Bugs are reddish-brown in colour, flattened and oval in shape. Adults can grow to 4-5mm in length and 1.5-3mm wide.
There are a number of health effects associated with bed bugs - humans can experience rashes, and allergic reactions to the bites.

Fleas
Fleas are not only a nuisance to humans and their pets but they can cause medical issues such as Flea Allergy Dermatitis (FAD), anemia, tapeworms, and stomach flu.
When fleas lay eggs on their hosts, many are shaken loose from fur or hair and end up whereever the host rests or sleeps. Humidity is a key element to the life cycle of a flea, and using dehumidifiers and other such appliances can interrupt the life cycle but are not a method of control.

Cockroaches
Cockroaches can adapt to almost any environment, but prefer the warmth that can be found within buildings.
The chemical traces within cockroach droppings attracts other cockroaches and this is why there can be large populations of this insect within an environment.
It is important to get rid of these pests as quickly as possible as they can carry microbes on their bodies that are potentially harmful to humans.

Rats
Rats will tend to live in environments close to humans in order to secure a steady food source. However, they can carry pathogens on their bodies which can be transferred to humans and therefore should be eradicated as quickly as possible.

Mice
Mice can adapt to any environment in which they live. They, like rats, tend to inhabit areas close to humans in order to have access to food sources, and can also carry diseases that are potentially dangerous to humans.
Mice can become a bigger problem during the Winter months when they migrate towards the warmth of buildings.

Ants
Ants can be just as much of a problem as their relations, wasps and bees.
They have colonised just about every continent on earth and will sometimes form colonies in or around houses. Once inside a home, ants will be drawn to food sources, and trails of ants may be found coming or going from the pantry or kitchen.

Mosquitos
Whilst male mosquitos will feed on nectar and plants, the females need to have a blood meal in order to produce eggs. As such, female mosquitos can carry a number of deadly, or infectious diseases that can be transmitted to humans.
Don't let the good old summer barbeque be ruined by swarming mosquitos - give us a call and we'll discuss your pest control needs. -
White Tail Spider
Unfortunately for us, the favoured prey of the white-tailed spider is the common black house spider which means that they love to move into our homes and live in cracks, hide in the folds of clothes and towels, or even in our shoes.
Because White-Tailed Spiders like to live in areas where humans may encounter them without noticing them, these spiders contribute to a large number of spider bites in New Zealand annually - whilst not deadly, they do inflict a painful bite.
If you think you may have white-tailed spiders in or around your home, give us a call and we'll come and discuss your pest control needs.
